Dental Plaque in Greenlawn

Tooth decay and gum disease are the two biggest enemies of your oral health, and both are traced back to dental plaque as the source. We at the office of Roger Curtiss, DDS want to help you avoid the consequences of dental plaque. And with a solid at-home strategy combined with twice-yearly visits for an examination and cleaning, you’ll be in an excellent position to make tooth decay and gum disease infrequent results.

Plaque is like a film that contains bacteria. It’s invisible, but you can sense its presence when you wake up each morning. That coating that feels as if it’s on your teeth and tongue is the evidence of plaque. Sugar fuels the production of plaque, so it’s a good idea to keep your consumption of it to a minimum. Brushing first thing upon waking up is essential to wash away that plaque in your mouth. You should also brush before you go to sleep, and combine that with a vigorous flossing. And if that’s all it took, you might never have to come to our Greenlawn dentist office. However, plaque can avoid the reach of your oral hygiene regimen, and then turn into hardened tartar. Once plaque has become tartar, it is virtually impossible to remove it except with a professional teeth cleaning at our Greenlawn dentist office. And since plaque can also irritate and redden your gums, signs of the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, it is essential to get a cleaning done every six months. It will halt the progress of gum disease and reverse its effects. Latter stage gum disease is associated with more severe symptoms, including the eventual loss of gum and bone tissue and loose teeth, so it’s easy to see how important cleanings are.

Preventative Care in Greenlawn

Greenlawn Dentist

Greenlawn Dentist

One of the most important goals of any dental practice is to help its patients prevent future dental problems from ever occurring. Our Greenlawn dentist offers many preventative care services to keep the whole family’s teeth healthy and their smile looking great. Our practice believes that our patients are the first line of defense in protecting their own teeth from decay and other dental problems and that together we can prevent future problems and promote healthy teeth.

Our Greenlawn dentist, Dr. Roger Curtiss, DDS provides many preventative dental services including regular comprehensive examinations and radiographs to evaluate the state of your oral health and diagnose any present or developing problems. Our doctor can recommend treatments that can minimize any impending problems. Our practice stresses that the best way to prevent tooth and gum problems caused by decay is to keep the teeth clean. Our office emphasizes regular that teeth cleanings will help rid the teeth of decay causing bacteria from left over food particles and other debris. A dental cleaning from our hygienist scrapes away these food particles from around and between the teeth and gums. The office cleaning alone is not enough to ward off future problems. Our doctors recognize the extreme importance of routine daily dental care at home. Proper tooth brushing, flossing and use of dental rinses are key to promoting good dental health.

Our Greenlawn dentist not only works with adult patients in promoting good dental care habits but we work with our younger patients to make sure that they develop the best techniques in terms of daily dental care and understand the importance of it. We try to make good dental habits fun for children. Preventative care is essential for keeping both natural and even restored teeth healthy. While preventative care from our office will not prevent every future tooth problem from occurring, it will help stave off most problems and help mitigate the impact of those that do occur. Make an appointment with our office to evaluate the state of your dental health and we’ll develop a preventative program just for you.

Gum Disease in East Northport New York

If you want your teeth and gums to remain healthy, it is important that you visit our dental practice for regular dental exams and teeth cleanings. If you have a problem with gum disease, our East Northport New York dentist, Dr. Roger D. Curtiss, can provide you with gum treatments at our dental practice, Roger Curtiss, DDS.

During our regular dental exams, your entire mouth will be assessed to determine whether or not it is an excellent oral health. As part of your dental exam, our East Northport New York dentist will assess whether or not your gums are experiencing any problems. If it is found that you have gingivitis, a common precursor to gum disease, our dentist will most likely recommend that you have several regular dental cleanings over the coming months to help your gums return to good health. However, if our dentist finds that deep pockets have developed between your teeth and gums, you will have gum disease. When deep pockets form, tartar, plaque, bacteria, and food debris will all gather in these deep pockets and infection will form. Infection will travel down to your jawbone and can cause teeth to loosen and even fall out. It is very important that you receive treatment for gum disease, if it is. Patients can receive a scaling and root planing treatment at our office which is often called a deep cleaning for the gums. During this periodontal treatment, all materials will be removed from the deep pockets, and the tooth roots will be planed to make it more difficult for plaque and other harmful substances to stick to them. This treatment should help your gums to become healthy again; sometimes an additional treatment is needed in order to obtain the necessary results. If the gums do not improve after a scaling and root planing treatment, gum surgery may be needed.
