Asharoken dentist

Here at the office of Dr. Roger Curtiss, the top Asharoken dentist, we love to help each of our patients reach their full smile potential! If you are looking to make some improvements to your smile, no matter how big or small, our Asharoken dentist is here to help. A great way to improve several issues in your smile once is to use the restorative/cosmetic method of veneers. Veneers are thin strips of porcelain or other similar, tooth-colored materials that are custom shaped and installed directly over your natural teeth. The teeth simply need to be shaved down a small amount in order to have the veneers fit securely in place and look completely natural. Dr. Curtiss can use veneers to correct a number of common dental issues, like chips, gaps, stains, misshapen teeth, and more all at once! Another bonus is that veneers are very easy to maintain—they require no extra work than your regular teeth do, just brush and floss and keep up with your regular dental visits. In addition, your veneers will also be resistant to staining. If you are interested in getting veneers for yourself, just schedule a consultation with our Asharoken dentist so that we can get started on your individualized treatment plan and take you one step closer to the smile of your dreams.

If you would like to learn more about veneers, or about any of the other many services that our Asharoken dentist has to offer, we highly recommend that you pay a visit to Dr. Roger Curtiss’ main website and browse through the rest of the detailed information available to you there. The cost is moderate and depends on the size of the filling and the technique used by the dentist to place it in the prepared tooth. It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than what is required for an amalgam filling. Composite fillings require a cavity that can be kept clean and dry during filling and they are subject to stain and discoloration over time.

Dental Services in Northport

Northport New York Dental Services

From routine cleanings and fillings to full mouth restorations, our office is equipped to handle all of your dental needs. To help you understand your options, we have included descriptions of some of our leading services below.

Initial Oral Examination

Your first visit at our office is very important in establishing your oral health baseline. We will perform a complete oral examination which includes an oral cancer screening, periodontal evaluation, an analysis of your occlusion (bite) and a thorough examination of your teeth, their supporting structures and of the oral anatomy.

The Preventive Program

Both natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean and where the intake of harmful foods is controlled. Our dental hygiene program is designed to preserve teeth that have been restored and manage periodontal disease. At the initial visit with our hygienist, oral hygiene instructions are reviewed and are reinforced at subsequent recall visits.

Dental Fillings in Northport

Traditional dental restoratives, or fillings, include porcelain and composite. The strength and durability of traditional dental materials make them useful for situations where restored teeth must withstand extreme forces that result from chewing, such as in the back of the mouth. Newer dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are usually used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but they can also be used on the back teeth depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay.

Root Canal Treatment in 11768

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges. Symptoms of the infection are generally acute dental pain or sensitivity to hot, cold or percussion. If you experience any of these symptoms, we will most likely recommend root canal therapy to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases.

Veneers

Gaps, chips, stains, or misshapen teeth can now be treated with wonderful results and very conservatively using porcelain veneers. Veneers are natural in appearance, and are a perfect alternative for patients wanting to make minor adjustments to the look and feel of their smile. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells made from tooth-colored materials (such as porcelain) designed to cover the front side of your teeth.

Crowns & Caps

The terms dental crowns and caps are synonymous. Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth’s function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth. Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance. Crowns are fabricated in a laboratory and are made either of porcelain baked onto a metal substrate, all-porcelain, or many of the new ceramic materials that have been developed.

Bridges & Dentures

A bridge may be used to replace missing teeth, help maintain the shape of your face, and alleviate stress on your bite. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, looks great, and literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. Your bridge can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support. There are two basic types of bridges. A fixed bridge which remains in your mouth at all times and is supported by your natural teeth. Removable bridges (partials and full dentures) are removed from the mouth several times a day for cleaning and rest on the gum where the missing teeth are being replaced.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

If, like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. During your consultation visit, we will address your specific needs and considerations. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.

Tooth Whitening

Our state-of-the-art bleaching system will make your teeth whiter in easy at-home applications with outstanding results achieved in just days.

Extractions

When tooth removal is necessary, we can perform simple extractions using local anesthesia. If you choose, we can also replace the missing teeth with dental implants.

Gum Treatment

Periodontal treatment methods depend upon the type and severity of the disease. We will evaluate your progression of periodontal disease and recommend the appropriate treatment. Periodontal disease progresses as the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque, and tartar causing irritation to the surrounding tissues. When these irritants remain in the pocket, they cause infection and damage to the gums and eventually, the bone that supports the teeth. If the disease is caught in the early stages (known as Gingivitis) and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings may be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings. However, if the disease has progressed to a more advanced stage, where the infection has caused bone loss and diseased pockets have formed, your treatment options may include scaling and root planing, bone surgery or gum therapy.

East Northport Cosmetic Dentist

Dental Care 11768

Bottom line, anyone who has teeth can get cavities, and cavities and dental decay are among the world’s most common health problems. Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into very small openings or holes. Also referred to as tooth decay, cavities are caused by a number of issues, including teeth not being cleaned well, bacteria in your mouth, snacking too often, and drinking overly sugared beverages. Our East Northport cosmetic dentist, Roger Curtiss, DDS, likes to educate all our patients on the importance of good oral hygiene and the consequences of cavities and dental decay.

11768 Dental Exams

When cavities are left untreated, they get larger and soon affect the deeper layers of your teeth. These untreated cavities will also lead to infection, severe toothache, and, ultimately, loss of the tooth. Dr. Curtiss cannot stress enough how important regular dental visits are as well as good brushing and flossing habits to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Some signs to look out for are toothache, sensitivity or sharp pain when eating sweets or something hot or cold, pain when biting down, visible holes in teeth, or any discharge around your teeth or gums. There may be no symptoms at all when a cavity is new but our East Northport cosmetic dentist might be able to see decay starting and recommend the proper steps to prevent it from getting worse. That’s why it’s necessary to make and keep regular dental checkup appointments as well and cleanings. Your mouth can feel fine but by the time you notice symptoms, the damage has gotten worse.

As far as treatments for cavities go, it depends on the severity of the decay and each patient’s situation. One common treatment for cavities just beginning is a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a mineral that helps teeth repair themselves at early stages of decay. Once the damage has become permanent, fillings replace decayed areas of your teeth and are the main treatment option. If you have extensive decay or your teeth have gotten weak due to the cavity, you may need a crown, instead of a filling, to restore your tooth. Our East Northport cosmetic dentist will recommend a root canal when decay reaches the inner material of your tooth (pulp). With this procedure, the tooth pulp is removed and replaced with a filling. When teeth become badly decayed and there is no option for restoration, they must be removed.

Simply put, dental prophylaxis is a dental treatment used to stop the progression of periodontal disease and gingivitis. Our East Northport general dentist specializes in this deep cleaning procedure. Prophylaxis is a deep teeth cleaning procedure that keeps the oral cavity in good health and makes sure that gum disease does not progress.

Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria gets above or below the gum line. The body fights back by systematically destroying the affected gums. Receding gums causes the teeth to shift, become unstable and in some cases, fall out completely. Gum disease is serious and should not be ignored. The bacteria in the gums can collect and eventually spread and infect other parts of the body through the bloodstream.
