In order to keep your teeth clean and cavity free, and gums healthy, you will want to have dental cleanings at our dental practice, Roger Curtiss, DDS. However, if your gums are in poor health you may need to get periodontal cleanings at our office as well. When you come to our dental practice for a Greenlawn dental checkup, our dentist, Dr. Roger D. Curtiss, will assess the health of your gums and let you know exactly what type of dental cleanings may be needed.
Is generally recommended that a regular dental cleaning is performed every six months at our dental practice. A regular dental cleaning will remove all excess plaque and tartar from your teeth. By removing these materials, it will help to keep your teeth cavity-free. If during your Greenlawn dental checkup, our dentist sees that you have gingivitis, a precursor to gum disease, he most likely will recommend that you have several regular dental cleanings over the coming months to make sure that your gums return to good health. However, if during a regular dental exam, it is seen that you have developed deep pockets between your teeth and gums, this means that you have at least a mild case of gum disease. At this point, you will need to have a periodontal scaling and root planing treatment at our office. This treatment is like a deep cleaning for the gums, and is often performed with the help of local anesthesia so that our patient remains perfectly comfortable during the treatment. During this scaling and root planing treatment, all excess material is removed from the teeth and between the deep pockets. The roots are then smoothed down so that it is less likely that any extra debris will be able to stay attached to them. This type of periodontal treatment is used to treat gum disease, or as a preventive measure when a patient is known to be prone to developing gum disease.
