If wisdom teeth grow in crooked, only partially, and/or become impacted, there is little doubt that they will need to be removed. You are likely to experience pain and swelling and may develop an infection during the process of these teeth erupting, which typically occurs in the late teens to early 20s. We at the office of Roger Curtiss, DDS, are dedicated to minimizing any suffering from wisdom teeth by extracting them in a timely manner.

When you come in, our dentist in Northport will fist determine if you do have an infection. If so, you may need to take antibiotics first in order to reduce swelling prior to our wisdom teeth extraction. The procedure itself will be done under local anesthesia. You will feel pressure as the teeth are removed, but not pain. Oral surgery may seem scary, but we can assure you that our dentist in Northport has the level of expertise and experience to perform these tooth extractions with gentle care. The gum tissue over the tooth must be opened first. Any bone tissue covering the tooth and connected to the tooth will be separated to gain unhindered access. The teeth may have to be taken out in pieces. This is quite common and nothing to be worried about. Getting them out promptly is important, because otherwise they can crowd your other teeth, damage bone tissue and nerves. Full recovery from the surgery may take a few days. For the first 24 hours, make liberal use of ice packs on the outside of your mouth and over-the-counter pain relief medication. You’ll also want to maintain a soft diet during that time. Pudding, broth, and gelatin are good choices.
